Sendero de Aves, Calakmul Biosphere Reserve

The trailhead is directly behind the Museo de Naturaleza y Arqueologia de Calakmul at km 20 of the reserve access road south of Conhuas, reached by private car or by the guided vans from Xpujil that stop here en route to the ruins; the biosphere gate fee applies since the trail sits inside the CONANP boundary. The route is a short 2.3 km out-and-back loop with almost no elevation change, laid out on a well-maintained gravel and packed-earth surface with numbered interpretive stations describing the ramon, chicozapote, and mahogany trees that dominate this stretch of forest. Shade is near-total along the entire loop, making it the most comfortable walk in the reserve even at midday, and the gentle terrain requires no technical skill or specialised footwear. Landmarks are the numbered stations themselves rather than ruins, each pairing a short panel with the surrounding forest structure, and the loop's far point doubles as the turn-around for walkers pressed for time. There is no water source or shelter beyond the museum building at the trailhead, where restrooms and some shade are available before and after the walk. The trail is best known among visitors as the most reliable place in the reserve for close views of turquoise-browed motmots, chachalacas, and keel-billed toucans without committing to a full day at the archaeological sites, and the museum itself provides useful context on the reserve's ecology before or after walking.
