Xpujil and the Río Bec Sites

Xpujil lies 300 km southeast of San Francisco de Campeche via Escárcega, about 4h 30m by rental car on Highway 180 to Escárcega then Highway 186 east, or reached by the Tren Maya's Escárcega-Chetumal section, which stops at Xpujil station 2.5 km north of town. The town sits at the centre of the Río Bec architectural region, whose temples imitate impossibly steep pyramids with towers too narrow to climb and doorways carved as the open jaws of an earth monster. Within a 20 km radius, visitors can see the twin towers of the Xpujil archaeological zone itself, the moated and fortified city of Becán, the elaborate monster-mouth facade at Chicanná, and the twin-towered temple at Hormiguero, each reachable by local taxi or community guide from town. A one-day plan built around Xpujil starts with the closest site, typically Becán given its scale, moves to Chicanná for its carved facade in the late morning, and finishes at Xpujil or the more remote Hormiguero in the afternoon before the light softens for photography. Because Xpujil is also the practical staging point for Calakmul, 60 km west along Highway 186 and then 60 km south on the reserve access road, many visitors treat the town as a two-day base: one day for the closer Río Bec sites, one for the long drive into Calakmul. Food options in town are simple comedores rather than tourist restaurants, and cash is essential throughout the area, since card acceptance is limited and there are no ATMs south of the highway. The dry season from December to March keeps the forest access tracks passable and travel conditions most comfortable.
