Edzná Archaeological Zone

Edzná sits 55 km southeast of San Francisco de Campeche, roughly an hour away by rental car along the Carretera Campeche-China-Pich, or by colectivo van from the terminal near Puerta de Tierra in Campeche city. The Tren Maya also stops at Edzná station, 15 minutes from the ruins by taxi. The site's centrepiece is the Gran Acrópolis, a raised plaza ringed by temples and dominated by the five-storey Edificio de los Cinco Pisos, a stepped pyramid-palace whose upper levels carry a roof comb visible from well outside the site. Beyond the acropolis, visitors can walk the Plataforma de los Cuchillos, the ballcourt, and the Templo de los Mascarones with its stucco sun-god masks, while the surrounding canal and reservoir network, among the largest hydraulic systems built by the ancient Maya, shows how the city irrigated and drained a seasonal swamp to support a large population without a nearby river. A typical day starts early, arriving at the 08:00 opening before the heat builds, spending the morning climbing the Edificio de los Cinco Pisos and exploring the acropolis, then breaking for lunch back in Campeche city or at a roadside comedor along the return route serving cochinita pibil and fresh horchata. The dry season from November to March keeps mornings cool and paths firm underfoot; afternoons in the rainy summer months can bring sudden downpours that flood the low-lying plazas. A colectivo departing Campeche city by 08:00 allows a full morning at the ruins with a return trip by early afternoon, and travellers combining the site with Campeche city's colonial centre often treat Edzná as a half-day excursion rather than an all-day trip.
