Uxmal and the Ruta Puuc

Uxmal lies 175 km northeast of San Francisco de Campeche, about 2h 30m by rental car on Highway 261 north through Hopelchén and Bolonchén de Rejón before crossing into Yucatán at Santa Elena. The drive itself is part of the day, since Highway 261 threads past the smaller Puuc satellite sites of Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak and Labná, each a short stop rather than a destination on its own. At Uxmal, the elliptical Pyramid of the Magician dominates the entrance plaza, its rounded corners and steep stairways unlike any other Maya pyramid, while the Nunnery Quadrangle's four long buildings are covered in stone latticework, serpent motifs and stacked Chaac rain-god masks, and the Governor's Palace beyond ranks among the most refined facades in Maya architecture. A one-day itinerary works best leaving Campeche city by 07:00, arriving at Uxmal for the 08:00 opening to see the main plazas before tour buses from Mérida arrive around mid-morning, then continuing south along the Ruta Puuc to Kabah's Codz Poop facade and, time permitting, Sayil or Labná, before turning back toward Campeche in the afternoon. Food options are limited to a small visitor centre restaurant at Uxmal itself and simple comedores in Santa Elena and Muna along the route, so packing water and snacks for the satellite sites is worthwhile. The dry season from November to March keeps walking conditions comfortable, and visitors who linger can catch the Ecos de Uxmal light-and-sound show at 19:00 in winter or 20:00 in summer, though that extends the day well past a typical return to Campeche city.
