Mérida by Tren Maya

Mérida sits 195 km northeast of San Francisco de Campeche, reached in 2h 14m to 2h 38m by Tren Maya to Mérida Teya station, 15 km east of the centre with a shuttle onward, or in 2h 25m to 2h 35m by ADO first-class bus direct to the CAME terminal on Calle 70, a short taxi from the Plaza Grande. Once in the centre, the Plaza Grande is ringed by the 16th-century cathedral, the Casa de Montejo and the Palacio Municipal, all walkable within a few blocks, while the Paseo de Montejo's early 20th-century mansions lead north past the anthropology museum toward the striking Gran Museo del Mundo Maya. A day trip works well starting with an early Tren Maya departure to arrive in central Mérida by mid-morning, spending the first half of the day on the Plaza Grande, the cathedral and the Mercado Lucas de Gálvez for local produce and lunch stalls, then continuing in the afternoon along the Paseo de Montejo to the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya before the return train or bus in the early evening. The city's restaurant scene runs from cochinita pibil stands near the market to sit-down Yucatecan kitchens around the Plaza Grande, offering far more variety than smaller Campeche towns. Weather is comfortable for walking from November to March; visitors timing a trip for a Sunday can also catch Mérida en Domingo, when the centre closes to traffic for live music, food stalls and dancing around the plaza. The Tren Maya remains the fastest and most predictable option, though ADO buses run up to 82 times a day and are a reliable backup if train schedules do not align with a planned return.
