Ciudad del Carmen and the Laguna de Términos

Ciudad del Carmen sits 190 km southwest of San Francisco de Campeche, about three hours by ADO bus or rental car along Highway 180's coastal route through Champotón, Sabancuy and Isla Aguada, crossing onto the island via the 3.2 km Puente de la Unidad. The city occupies a barrier island between the Gulf of Mexico and the Laguna de Términos, Mexico's largest coastal lagoon and a protected flora and fauna area of mangrove, seagrass beds and dolphin habitat. A day here typically starts with the shaded Zócalo and the 19th-century Iglesia de la Virgen del Carmen in the historic centre, followed by time on Playa Norte, the most developed beach stretch in Campeche state, with palapa restaurants and beach clubs along the sand. In the afternoon, visitors can watch the working shrimp fleet return to the docks or arrange a dolphin-watching boat trip from Isla Aguada, at the lagoon's eastern mouth, roughly 45 minutes back along Highway 180. Beach stops at Sabancuy and Isla Aguada along the coastal drive back toward Campeche city are worth building into the return leg rather than treating Ciudad del Carmen as a rushed round trip. Because the full round trip runs close to six hours of travel alone, many visitors choose to overnight on the island, especially if adding the dolphin excursion, though a determined day-tripper leaving Campeche city by 07:00 can still manage the Zócalo, Playa Norte and a seafood lunch before the return bus or drive in the afternoon. The dry season from November to April is most comfortable for the beach, and the Fiesta del Carmen fills the city with processions and events in mid-July for those timing a visit around the festival.
