Playa Champotón

Playa Champotón runs along the malecón of Champotón town, about 65 km south of San Francisco de Campeche, at the point where the Río Champotón empties into the Gulf of Mexico. Because of this river mouth, the water carries sediment and is noticeably less clear than beaches further from a river outlet, so the appeal here is as much the food and the setting as the swimming itself. The shore is a shallow, gently shelving strand facing the open Gulf, with light wind exposure and no significant surf. Champotón's palapa seafood restaurants along the malecón are known statewide for shrimp, pan de cazón and fried fish, and the promenade fills with local families on Sunday afternoons for a walk and a meal. Amenities include public restrooms in the town centre, a shaded promenade with benches, street parking and boat trips that run upriver into the surrounding mangroves; there are no lifeguards. Shrimp season in the late dry months brings the best eating, when the catch is at its most abundant. For cleaner swimming water, most visitors continue a short drive south to Punta Xen rather than swimming directly at Champotón. Access from the capital is easy: ADO and SUR buses take about an hour for 45-120 MXN to the Champotón terminal, a short walk from the seafront, making it a practical stop for a seafood lunch and a river excursion rather than a swimming destination.
