Playa Payucán

Playa Payucán, in the Municipio de Seybaplaya about 35 km southwest of San Francisco de Campeche, is widely regarded as the prettiest easily reached undeveloped beach in the state. The sand is pale and fine, and the roughly 1.5 km crescent of shoreline curves between low hills that shelter it from strong wind and give it a bay-like, enclosed shape rather than open exposure. The water is shallow and generally placid, with light Gulf-green clarity, suiting relaxed swimming and wading far more than surfing. There is no real development along the beach: a line of palapa shade shelters and a handful of seafood cooks selling fried fish and ceviche make up the entire infrastructure, with no loungers to rent, no shops and no lifeguards. Parking is informal, on a sand track behind the beach. Weekday visitors often have long stretches of sand entirely to themselves, while weekends bring more local families from the capital and nearby Seybaplaya, though crowds remain modest compared with the developed beaches near Ciudad del Carmen. Access requires transferring through Seybaplaya: a colectivo van runs from the Campeche city terminal for about 25 MXN, followed by a short taxi to the beach, or a direct taxi covers the full 40-45 minute trip for roughly 200 MXN. The combination of scenery, calm water and near-total lack of development makes Payucán the state's standout choice for visitors who want an attractive natural beach without the infrastructure of Playa Norte.
