Isla Arena

Isla Arena is a sandbar fishing village at the far northern tip of the Campeche coast, about 145 km north of San Francisco de Campeche and 72 km west of Calkiní. The beach itself is wide, open and largely empty, with pale sand and light wind exposure typical of the exposed northern coastline, but it is the surrounding mangrove estuaries -- not the sand -- that draw most visitors, since they hold Caribbean flamingos, cormorants, frigatebirds and pelicans. Swimming is shallow and calm, suited to wading and family time rather than serious swimming, and the real activity here is boat travel through the wetland channels, which connect to the same system as the Petenes Biosphere Reserve. Services are basic: village seafood kitchens, a crocodile farm and melipona bee visits nearby, and a handful of basic guesthouses, but no lifeguards and very limited formal infrastructure at the beach itself, so cash and drinking water should be carried in. November to April, the dry season, is also the peak period for flamingo and migratory bird activity in the estuaries. The trip requires either a rental car via Highway 180 to Calkiní and then a 14 km paved spur west, or an organised excursion from Campeche city, which typically departs around 05:00 and returns near 17:00 for roughly 2,750 MXN per person.
