Hochob Archaeological Zone

Hochob crowns a low hill a short drive from the town of Dzibalchen and preserves what is often called the finest single facade in Chenes architecture. Structure II, the Principal Palace, presents a complete earth-monster mask across its entire front: a doorway forms the open jaws, flanked by two side rooms whose small square windows read as the monster's eyes, with a curled nose and rows of stone teeth still crisply modeled after more than a thousand years. Unlike sites where such carving has eroded or partially collapsed, Hochob's mask survives close to complete, making it one of the most photographed single buildings in Campeche despite the site's small size and modest visitor numbers. The plaza in front of Structure II is compact, framed by lower flanking structures and dry scrub forest typical of the Chenes region's drier, less densely wooded terrain compared with Rio Bec. A visit takes about an hour, most of it spent studying and photographing the facade from different angles. Direct light reaches the mask most fully in late morning, picking out the depth of the carving; earlier or later in the day, shadows can flatten the detail in photographs.
