Calakmul Jungle and Ruins Day Expedition from Xpujil

Xpujil, on Federal Highway 186 in the Calakmul municipality of Campeche, Mexico, is the standard base for a full-day guided expedition to the Calakmul archaeological zone deep in the biosphere reserve. Departures around 05:30 aim to reach the ruins for opening and the morning howler monkey chorus, with certified guides handling the three cash gates on the way in: the Conhuas community fee of about 90 MXN per vehicle, the CONANP reserve fee of about 110 MXN for Mexican nationals and 215 MXN for foreign visitors, and the INAH site ticket of about 100 MXN. The day involves roughly 8 km of walking across the Grand Plaza and the long circuits between temple groups, so a reasonable level of fitness and comfort with heat and humidity is expected; there is no strict age limit, but the distance and lack of shade make it a demanding day for very young children. No specialist gear is included beyond the guide's vehicle and knowledge; visitors bring closed walking shoes, three litres of water and a packed lunch, since there is no food service at the ruins. Established operators on the Highway 186 corridor, including Ka'an Expeditions, Visit Calakmul and Calakmul Mayan Adventure, are certified to guide within the reserve and carry the permits needed to navigate the CONANP checkpoints efficiently. Guides carry first-aid supplies and satellite or radio communication is common given the remoteness of the site, roughly 60 km down a single access road from the highway; the return route stops at the Museo de Naturaleza y Arqueologia at km 20, which doubles as a rest point. The dry season from November to April is firmly recommended, since the access road is slowest and can be difficult after heavy rain in the June-to-October wet season.
