Sport Fishing at the Champoton River Mouth

Champoton, on the Gulf coast of Campeche, Mexico, has fished the mouth of the Rio Champoton since before the Spanish arrived, and the malecon pier cooperatives still take anglers out daily. Inside the river and along its mangrove banks the target species are snook and tarpon, while a short run offshore puts boats onto Spanish mackerel, jack crevalle and red snapper over the shallow Campeche Bank. No fishing experience is required, as captains and deckhands rig tackle and assist throughout, making the outing suitable for beginners as well as experienced anglers; children can join, though a full 5-6 hour half-day charter is a long stretch on open water for very young ones. Rods, reels and bait are supplied by the captain on request; anglers bring sun protection, non-marking deck shoes and their own food and water. Charters are run directly by Champoton fishing cooperatives at the pier or arranged through waterfront hotels, giving a choice between booking dockside on arrival or reserving in advance through a hotel concierge. A Mexican sport-fishing licence is legally required for saltwater trips, and captains normally arrange it as part of the charter price rather than leaving anglers to source one separately. Captains carry basic first-aid and safety equipment standard to small Gulf coast fishing vessels and stay within radio range of the malecon pier for inshore trips; offshore runs to the Campeche Bank go further out but remain within established local fishing grounds the captains use daily. Tarpon and snook fishing peaks from March to August, while Spanish mackerel are more consistent from November to February; charters run year-round but are weather-dependent, with captains best placed to judge sea conditions on the day.
