Bahia de los Angeles islands

Bahia de los Angeles, a village on a broad, sheltered bay on the Sea of Cortez in the Ensenada Municipality, offers sixteen desert islands set in still water beneath the Sierra de la Asamblea, with whale sharks visible in the shallows through late summer. The strongest landscape frames come from the waterfront at dawn, when the bay is glassy and the islands stack in overlapping layers of haze toward the horizon, well suited to a telephoto lens that compresses the layers into a graphic composition. Whale-shark photography is done from a panga boat, generally in the shallows near the village, with an underwater housing or action camera used at the surface or in a snorkel; encounters are strongest from July through October, when juvenile whale sharks feed on plankton concentrations in the bay, while the calmest seas and clearest air for landscape photography of the islands run from October through April. Bahia de los Angeles remains lightly visited relative to Baja California's coastal resort towns, given its remote location roughly five hours from Ensenada, so a tripod position on the waterfront is rarely contested; whale-shark trips, by contrast, can have several boats operating in the bay at once during peak season, though the local cooperative caps encounters to one boat per animal. There is no fee to photograph the bay and islands from shore. Whale-shark encounters are regulated by Mexican federal authorities: no touching the animals, no flash photography, and no more than one boat per shark at a time, and photographers should book through the village fishing cooperative rather than an unlicensed panga operator, both for the animals' welfare and for legal certainty. Tripods are unrestricted on the public waterfront. There is no meaningful drone use over the whale-shark encounter zone, since federal wildlife regulations and safety around swimmers make it inappropriate.
