Dandy del Sur is a narrow, dimly lit cantina near the corner of Calle 6a and Avenida Madero in the Zona Centro of Tijuana, Baja California, operating since the 1950s and now a fixture for the city's writers, musicians and longtime regulars. The crowd is mixed-age and unpretentious, from students to older Tijuana locals who have been coming for decades; there is no dress code and no bottle-service posture anywhere in the room. Rather than a DJ or live act, the bar is built around its jukebox, stocked with rancheras, boleros and classic rock, which regulars feed with coins through the night. Drinks are cheap and simple: bottled Mexican beer and basic mixed drinks at prices well below the tourist bars on nearby Revolucion, with no cocktail programme or wine list to speak of. The cantina opens daily at noon and runs until 2AM, staying steady with a small crowd through the afternoon and filling its narrow room shoulder-to-shoulder by mid-evening on weekends. There is no cover charge, no reservations and no table service beyond ordering at the bar; the room is small enough that standing room is common on busy nights.
