Sabah Weather & Climate Guide 2026

Plan your trip with detailed weather information and seasonal tips for Sabah.

Sabah, known as 'The Land Below the Wind,' is Malaysia's easternmost state on the island of Borneo, celebrated for its extraordinary biodiversity, towering Mount Kinabalu, and world-class diving at Sipadan Island. The state is home to over 42 ethnic groups, pristine rainforests, and wildlife including orangutans, pygmy elephants, and proboscis monkeys.

Best Time to Visit

Months to Avoid

November to January

The north-east monsoon brings heavy rainfall to the west coast and can make outdoor activities, sea crossing, and mountain hiking uncomfortable or impossible. Diving visibility is poorest December-February.

Climate Overview

Sabah has a tropical rainforest climate with year-round heat (25-32°C) and high humidity. Its nickname 'Land Below the Wind' reflects its position south of the typhoon belt, giving it relatively stable weather compared to the Philippines. The west coast (KK, Kinabalu) receives more rain from October to March, while the east coast (Sandakan, Semporna) has a more complex pattern with June-July being relatively drier.
