Beirut is the capital and largest city of Lebanon, a Mediterranean port of mosques, churches, Ottoman and French-mandate architecture, museums, corniche promenades and one of the Arab world's best food scenes. In October 2026 it is also a city under very restrictive government travel advisories (US Level 4 Do Not Travel; Canada avoid all travel; Australia do not travel; UK against all travel to parts of the city), so this guide leads with the security picture and then covers what is open, where to stay and eat, and how to get around.
Beirut has the most active nightlife in the Levant, concentrated in Mar Mikhael (Armenia Street), Gemmayzeh (Rue Gouraud), Hamra and Monot. Scenes fell back after the 2019 banking collapse, the 2020 port explosion, and the 2023-2024 and 2026 conflicts, but 2026 guides show venues trading again, with changes in hours and closures. Bars usually close at 02:00-03:00 on weekdays and later at weekends, and clubs run until the early morning. Always check Google Maps for tonight's opening and the latest security advice.
Evenings start with dinner after 20:00, then a bar crawl from about 22:00; nothing really fills before midnight. Mar Mikhael is the main hub, Gemmayzeh bars are older and more local, Hamra is student-oriented and cheaper, and Monot has bars and rooftops. Drinks are priced in US dollars. The security situation can change within hours, so check news and embassy advice before going out.
