Beirut is the capital and largest city of Lebanon, a Mediterranean port of mosques, churches, Ottoman and French-mandate architecture, museums, corniche promenades and one of the Arab world's best food scenes. In October 2026 it is also a city under very restrictive government travel advisories (US Level 4 Do Not Travel; Canada avoid all travel; Australia do not travel; UK against all travel to parts of the city), so this guide leads with the security picture and then covers what is open, where to stay and eat, and how to get around.
Accommodation overview
Beirut's hotels cluster in a few districts. Hamra, the commercial and university district of west Beirut, has the widest range from hostels to the Gefinor Rotana. Ain El Mreisseh and Minet El Hosn hold the waterfront towers, including the InterContinental Phoenicia, close to Zaitunay Bay. Raouche has seafront resorts such as the Mövenpick and several suite hotels. Gemmayzeh, Mar Mikhael, Monot and Achrafieh in the east have the boutique hotels, bars and galleries. Badaro and Karantina offer local, lower-priced bases. Prices are given in US dollars first because most tourist transactions in Lebanon are quoted in dollars; the official exchange rate is about 89,500 LBP per US dollar. Rates are estimates drawn from 2026 booking-site listings and vary strongly by season. Several governments advise against travel to Lebanon or parts of Beirut in 2026, and the southern suburbs are specifically flagged, so every traveller should read the current advisory and take a flexible rate. The Four Seasons Hotel Beirut, announced to reopen in early 2026 after reconstruction, is deliberately not listed because its opening could not be confirmed.

Check rates on Booking.comBooking tips
Get the best deals and avoid common mistakes.
Choose a refundable or flexible rate: security conditions in Lebanon can change at short notice and airlines may cancel flights.
Compare the hotel's own site with booking platforms; some hotels quote in US dollars only and expect payment in cash dollars or by card.
Book Gemmayzeh and Mar Mikhael rooms facing the back of the building; the Thursday to Saturday bar noise lasts until the early hours.
In July, August and the last two weeks of December, when the diaspora visits, rates rise sharply and good rooms sell out weeks ahead.
Ask whether the building has a backup generator, since mains electricity from the state grid runs only a few hours a day in many districts.
Carry the hotel's phone number and written address for taxi drivers, and agree the fare before getting in or use a ride-hailing app.
