St Peter's Church at Reiņa bulvāris 1 in the Old Town of Riga, Latvia, has a tower with a viewing platform that offers one of the highest public vantage points in the historic centre. St Peter's Church at Reiņa bulvāris 1 in the Old Town of Riga, Latvia, has a tower with a viewing platform that offers one of the highest public vantage points in the historic centre. The church dates from the 13th century, and its tall spire has been rebuilt several times, most recently after damage in the Second World War. A lift takes visitors to the platform, which looks over the red-tiled Old Town roofs, the Daugava River, the Pārdaugava bank and the modern city beyond.

The frame from the platform is a high-angle panorama. Facing east and north brings the roofs and streets of the Old Town, Riga Cathedral and the towers close to the camera; facing west looks across the river toward the National Library and the Pārdaugava skyline. The platform has openings on several sides, and the view is partly obstructed by railings and mesh in places, so photographers should use a lens hood or press the lens close to the opening and avoid reflections.

Light is best on a clear day in the morning or late afternoon, when low sun picks out the roofs and gives definition to the street canyons. Midday light is flatter and produces haze over the river. Clear, cold winter days offer crisp air and long views, while summer evenings give warm tones across the roofs. Overcast skies reduce contrast but make the roofs look flat.

A wide-angle lens of 16-35mm is useful for the roofscape and a 70-200mm lens isolates distant towers and bridges. A tripod is generally impractical on the small platform, and many visitors share the space, so handheld shooting with a higher shutter speed is the usual approach. A polarising filter can cut haze but may add reflections on glass. The platform is busiest at midday in summer and when tour groups arrive; early opening hours are the least crowded. A ticket fee applies, and the lift can have a queue at peak times. Photographers should check current opening hours and prices with the church before visiting. Drone flying from the platform is not practical, and Latvian rules restrict flying in central Riga.
