The House of Blackheads stands on Town Hall Square (Rātslaukums) in the Old Town of Riga, Latvia, and is among the most photographed facades in the Baltic states. Originally built in the 14th century for the Brotherhood of Blackheads, a guild of unmarried merchants, it was remodelled in Dutch Renaissance style in the early 17th century.

The building was destroyed in 1941 and its ruins were cleared after the war, then it was rebuilt to the original plans in the late 1990s. Its stepped gable, gilded clocks, sculpted figures and polychrome stonework give the frame a dense, decorative character.

The most useful frame is a wide shot from the middle of the square, with the Roland statue in the foreground and the gable filling the upper two thirds of the picture. A tighter frame of the gilded details works from the same position with a short telephoto. The square is open, so the facade receives direct light for much of the day; side light in the morning or late afternoon gives the carved relief the most depth, while midday sun flattens the stonework and creates harsh shadow under the cornices. Overcast days suit the colour of the facade and reduce glare on the gilding.

The best season is April to October, when the square is dry and the light lasts longest, although a snow-dusted square in December is a popular winter subject with Christmas market lights. Crowds peak between late morning and early evening in summer, with tour groups gathering around the Roland statue. Photographers who want an empty frame should arrive shortly after sunrise, when only a few cafe staff are setting up. Tripod placement is rarely a problem early or late in the day, but a tripod set up in the middle of the square at peak times blocks pedestrian traffic, so a compact model is more practical.

Exterior photography from the public square is free. No specific tripod ban is known for the open square, though interior photography rules depend on the museum inside. Drone use in central Riga is subject to Latvian aviation restrictions and controlled airspace, so operators should check current rules before flying. Cafes around the square provide restrooms and drinks for customers.
