Sigulda, Turaida and Krimulda together form the most popular day trip from Riga, set in the Gauja valley within Gauja National Park about 55 km northeast of the capital. The Vivi train from Riga Central Station reaches Sigulda in about 1 hour 10 minutes, roughly hourly, for about 3 to 4 EUR one way. Buses from the Riga International Coach Terminal are frequent, and drivers can take the A2 motorway in about 50 minutes. The train is the simplest option because Sigulda station sits close to the town centre and the main walking routes.

The area is known for three clusters of sights on either side of the Gauja river. In Sigulda itself stand the ruins of the medieval Sigulda castle of the Livonian Order, with a newer castle building nearby and the Sigulda sandstone cliffs and caves along the valley edge. The Sigulda cable car crosses the Gauja valley to the Krimulda side, where Krimulda manor and the surrounding hill paths are found. Beyond the town, Turaida Castle museum reserve, at Turaidas iela 10, holds a red-brick medieval castle with a climbable tower, a sculpture garden, a wooden church and the grave of the legendary Rose of Turaida.

A balanced day begins with an early train and a walk from the station to the Sigulda castle ruins, followed by the cable car across the valley before the midday queues. From Krimulda, a downhill path through the forest leads back toward the river, and visitors then continue to Turaida by local bus, taxi or a longer walk. Turaida needs about two hours for the tower, exhibitions and grounds. The late afternoon is suited to a meal in Sigulda town and a short walk along the cliffs before the return train. Visitors with more energy can add the Gutmanis cave and trail sections, while those short on time can drop Krimulda.

The best window runs from May to October. Late September and early October bring autumn colour across the valley, which is a particular draw, while summer offers the longest days. Winter brings snow and skiing on the Sigulda slopes but shorter daylight. Food stops are plentiful in Sigulda town centre and at the Turaida visitor area. Expect to spend about 20 to 35 EUR including castle tickets and lunch.
