Zao Onsen Dai-Rotenburo

Zao Onsen Dai-Rotenburo is the largest open-air bath in the Zao Onsen hot spring town of Yamagata City, Japan, set directly beside a forested mountain stream at the edge of the Zao Onsen ski and hiking area. The bath draws on one of Japan's most strongly acidic sulfur springs, prized for its milky, sulfurous water and reputed skin-conditioning properties, and has been used by bathers for centuries as a stop on visits to the surrounding cedar and beech forest. Facilities are simple and traditional: gender-separated open-air stone-and-wood pools with a combined capacity of roughly 200 bathers, changing huts, and cold-water rinse stations, without saunas, indoor lounges, or spa treatment rooms in the Western sense, since this is a community bathing facility rather than a resort spa. There are no therapists or treatment staff; visitors bathe unassisted according to Japanese onsen custom, rinsing before entering the shared water and refraining from bringing towels into the pool. No booking is required and no reservation system operates; visitors simply pay the entry fee at the counter during opening hours and bathe for as long as they wish within a typical 30 to 90 minute stay. The bath is especially popular after a day on the Zao Onsen ski slopes in winter or after hiking to see the frost-covered juhyo 'snow monsters' nearby, and in autumn the surrounding forest turns bright red and gold, drawing crowds on weekends. Because the water is highly acidic, it is not recommended for bathers with sensitive or broken skin, and jewelry should be removed before entering, as the sulfur content can tarnish metal.
