The Hanagasa Bus to Ginzan Onsen from Oishida Station is infrequent and cash-only - check the timetable before departing
Local Ou Main Line and Senzan Line trains run roughly hourly outside Yamagata City, so plan around the timetable rather than turning up at random
There is no direct train to the Shonai coast - all routes from Yamagata City transfer at Shinjo, so allow extra time
A rental car with winter tires opens up the Shonai coast and rural onsen towns that buses reach only a few times a day
