Atsumi Onsen Shomen-yu

Atsumi Onsen Shomen-yu is one of two historic public bathhouses in Atsumi Onsen, a hot spring town on the Shonai coast in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata, Japan, set beside the Atsumi River and long favored by writers and artists for its quiet riverside setting. The bathhouse draws on sodium-chloride spring water and serves as a community gathering point used by both local residents and guests of the town's ryokan who prefer a change from their own lodging's bath. Facilities are simple: a shared bathing room with washing stalls in a traditional wooden building, without saunas, treatment rooms, or spa amenities, since this is a public bathhouse rather than a resort facility. There are no therapists or treatment staff; bathers follow standard onsen etiquette, washing before entering the shared pool. No booking is required, and the bathhouse keeps long hours from early morning to evening. A typical visit lasts 20 to 40 minutes, and the low ¥300 entry fee makes it an easy stop while exploring Atsumi Onsen's riverside streets, which retain a quieter, more literary atmosphere than some of Yamagata's larger onsen towns.
