Yamagata Prefecture is a mountain-ringed prefecture on the Sea of Japan side of the Tohoku region, home to the cliffside temple of Yamadera, the gas-lit hot spring town of Ginzan Onsen, the ice-crusted "snow monster" trees of Zao Onsen, and the sacred pilgrimage peaks of Dewa Sanzan — a prefecture built around hot springs, cherry orchards, and centuries of mountain worship.
Yamagata Prefecture has a continental climate with pronounced seasonal extremes, sheltered inland from the moderating effect of the coast except in the Shonai (Sakata/Tsuruoka) region facing the Sea of Japan. Summers (July-September) are hot and humid with average highs around 28-30°C, while winters are long, cold, and among the snowiest of any inhabited region in Japan, with the mountain interior around Zao Onsen and the Yamagata Basin regularly recording over a meter of snow depth. January is typically the coldest and snowiest month, with average highs near 3°C and lows well below freezing. Spring and autumn are short but scenic, bringing cherry blossoms and vivid foliage respectively.

Spring
Months: Mar-May
Snow melts through March into April, cherry blossoms (sakura) peak in mid-to-late April in the Yamagata Basin, and temperatures climb from cool (5-10°C) to mild (15-20°C) by May. Fruit orchards begin blossoming, a preview of the region's famous cherry harvest.
Summer
Months: Jun-Aug
Warm to hot and humid (24-30°C), with a rainy season (tsuyu) in June-July before the Hanagasa Matsuri festival lights up Yamagata City in early August. River activities, cherry and fruit picking, and mountain hiking at altitude are popular.
Fall
Months: Sep-Nov
September stays warm before autumn foliage (koyo) peaks in mid-to-late October across the Zao and Gassan mountains, with brilliant reds and golds. November brings falling temperatures and the first snow at higher elevations.
Winter

Long, cold, and heavily snowbound, especially in the mountain interior; Zao Onsen becomes a major ski destination and the Okama crater area transforms with the famous juhyo 'snow monster' ice-covered trees from roughly late December through late February, peaking in dramatic form by mid-February.
