Yamagata Imoni Festival Experience, Yamagata City

The Yamagata Imoni Festival is a one-day civic event organized annually by the Yamagata City Imoni Festival Executive Committee along the Mamigasaki riverbank in Yamagata City. Rather than a bookable tour, it is a half-day public festival where the centerpiece is Japan's largest imoni pot, a roughly six-meter-diameter vessel that requires industrial cranes to move ingredients and a construction excavator repurposed as a stirring arm. The single dish served is imoni, Yamagata's taro-and-beef stew, prepared here at an enormous scale rather than as a sit-down multi-course meal; roughly 30,000 bowls are distributed to attendees over the course of the day, all savory with no dessert component. The event also includes live entertainment and food stalls selling other local specialties along the riverbank, giving attendees more to sample beyond the giant pot itself. Entry to the festival grounds is free, and each bowl of imoni is purchased individually at a low per-bowl price rather than bundled into a ticket. Because it draws large crowds from across the prefecture, lines for the signature pot can be long, and attendees who want a bowl without a lengthy wait should plan to arrive early. The festival takes place on a single day in mid-September each year, timed to the harvest season when Yamagata families traditionally hold their own smaller imoni parties.
