Zao Ropeway Green Season Ride and Alpine Flower Walk

During the snow-free months, the Zao Ropeway carries visitors from Sanroku Station up to Jizo Sancho Station at 1,661 meters on Mount Zao in Yamagata Prefecture, where short alpine walking loops of one to three kilometers pass through fields of wildflowers and give access to the Jizo-son summit shrine and views across the Zao mountain range. The ropeway ride requires no fitness or age minimum, and the walking loops at the top are graded easy, following maintained gravel and boardwalk paths suitable for most visitors including families with children, though the summit is a genuine alpine environment with thinner air and cooler temperatures than the base. No specialized equipment is provided or required beyond the ropeway ticket; visitors should bring their own comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket for the cooler summit air, water and sun protection, since the walking paths are largely exposed above the treeline. The ropeway is operated by Zao Ropeway Co., Ltd., the same long-established operator that runs the winter juhyo sightseeing service, and follows standard Japanese ropeway safety inspection and weather-suspension protocols; station staff monitor wind conditions and can halt the upper Jizo Sancho section in poor weather. Alpine flowers such as Nikko kisuge (day lilies) and other high-altitude species typically bloom from late June through August, making early-to-mid summer the most rewarding window for the flower walk, while the wider green season runs from late April to early November; visitors should avoid days with poor visibility at the summit, since fog can obscure both the views and the marked walking paths.
