Senninburo, Kawayu Onsen

Senninburo is an open-air hot spring bath set directly in the bed of the Otonashi River in Kawayu Onsen, a small hot-spring village in the mountains of Hongu-cho, Wakayama Prefecture, close to the Kumano Hongu Taisha shrine. Unlike a conventional bathhouse, there is no building or pool structure at all for the year-round bathing area: hot spring water bubbles up naturally through the river gravel, and bathers dig shallow pools in the riverbed by hand, mixing the hot spring water with the cooler river flow to find a comfortable temperature. From December through February, a section of the river is dammed to create Sennin-buro, a seasonal open-air bath roughly 40 by 15 metres, said to be the largest in Japan, with room for close to 1,000 bathers at once; it forms a striking scene with steam rising off the river in the winter cold, ringed by the village and surrounding hills. There is no treatment menu, no staff-administered therapies, and no dedicated facilities beyond simple changing areas near the riverbank; the setting is entirely natural and rustic, with mixed-gender bathing in swimsuits standard given the open riverside location. Because the bath is free and unstaffed, there is no reservation system and no booking process; entry is simply a matter of walking down to the riverbed at any time during opening hours. The village of Kawayu Onsen itself is small, with a handful of ryokan inns along the river, several of which pipe the same thermal water into private baths for guests who prefer more shelter, making Senninburo an easy stop alongside a stay in the village or a visit to nearby Kumano Hongu Taisha and the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails.
