Boukido Cave Onsen, Hotel Urashima

Boukido Cave Onsen is the signature bathing facility of Hotel Urashima, a large hot-spring resort on Nankai-jima, a small islet off Katsuura in southern Wakayama Prefecture reached only by the hotel's own boat shuttle from the mainland pier. The setting is unlike any conventional spa: the baths occupy a set of natural sea caves carved into the islet's volcanic rock by centuries of wave action, with the largest cave, Boki-do, opening directly onto the Pacific so bathers soak in mineral-rich water while looking out through a wide rock archway at open ocean and, at the right tide, breaking surf. A second, smaller cave bath, Genbu-do, adjoins it, and the hotel complex also maintains conventional indoor and outdoor onsen baths on the clifftop above the caves for guests who prefer a more sheltered soak. There is no treatment menu of massages or facials in the day-spa sense; the draw is the geology itself; sodium-chloride hot spring water piped into the caves is credited locally with easing muscle fatigue and improving circulation, and hotel staff rather than dedicated therapists oversee the bathing areas. Because Hotel Urashima is a full-service resort of several hundred rooms, the cave baths see steady traffic, and access is organized around the hotel's schedule: overnight guests can use the caves from check-in at 15:00 through the following morning, while non-staying visitors may use them for a set day-use fee during posted hours. Advance reservations are recommended for overnight stays, especially in peak seasons, since room rates vary with season and cave-view availability; day-use bathing generally operates on a walk-in basis. The boat shuttle itself is part of the experience, ferrying guests across a short stretch of water past the islet's cliffs before arrival. Combined with its position on the Kii Peninsula's Kumano coast, Boukido remains one of the more distinctive hot-spring experiences in Wakayama Prefecture.
