Sandanbeki Cliffs at Sunset

Sandanbeki is a two-kilometer stretch of sheer sea cliffs rising about 50 meters above the Pacific on the Shirahama coastline in Wakayama, and the classic shot frames the layered rock face and observation deck against the sunset over open water to the west. Twenty to thirty minutes before sunset, low side and backlight turns the stratified cliff face orange and deepens the shadows in its folds, while the sky and sea behind take on the strongest color; shooting into the sun this way benefits from a lens hood and careful metering to hold detail in the rock. The cliffs face open ocean, so clear winter skies (December-February) tend to give the sharpest, least hazy sunset colors, while summer humidity can mute contrast. Weather with scattered cloud rather than a completely clear sky often produces the most dramatic color as the low sun lights the cloud undersides. The main viewing area near the observation deck gets moderately busy at sunset with both visitors and couples, especially on weekends, but the two-kilometer clifftop path offers alternative vantage points away from the crowd at the central platform. Tripods are allowed along the public clifftop path and viewing areas; drone flight is restricted near the cliffs given the strong coastal winds and visitor density. There is no fee to walk the clifftop path, though the separate elevator down to the sea cave below (Sandanbeki Cave) charges an admission fee and is a different, ticketed attraction. The rock formations themselves sit within the Yoshino-Kumano National Park coastline, and erosion has carved sea caves into the base that are visible from several clifftop points without descending.
