Engetsu Island Silhouette

Engetsu-to is a small offshore island near Shirahama, Wakayama, with a natural sea arch worn through its center, and the signature shot silhouettes the arch against the setting sun over the Pacific from the shoreline park opposite the island. On roughly two windows each year, in late April and mid-August, the setting sun aligns directly with the arch opening for a few minutes, producing the shot the location is known for; outside those dates the island still makes a strong silhouette against general sunset color. The best light comes in the final 20 minutes before sunset, when the sun is low enough to sit within or near the arch and the sky behind takes on strong orange and red tones; a few minutes either side of the alignment window still gives usable partial-arch silhouettes. Clear evenings with a low western horizon give the cleanest results; haze or cloud on the horizon can hide the sun before it reaches arch height. The shoreline viewpoint is a public roadside park with a small parking area, and it draws a steady crowd of photographers and casual visitors on the exact alignment dates, so arriving at least an hour early secures a clear line to the arch. Tripods are permitted along the shoreline; there is no admission fee to view or photograph the island from the mainland viewpoint. The island itself is not accessible on foot, and drone flight over the strait is discouraged given boat traffic in the channel. Long exposures with a neutral density filter smooth the water in the foreground rocks and add a further sense of stillness to the silhouette composition.
