Scuba Diving at Kushimoto Marine Park

Kushimoto Marine Park, on the Kii Peninsula in southern Wakayama Prefecture, sits at the edge of the Kuroshio Current and hosts one of Japan's northernmost coral reef communities, drawing divers to see coral growth this far from the tropics alongside temperate reef fish. Boat dives are aimed at certified divers; a PADI, NAUI, or equivalent certification card is required to join boat trips, while the adjoining marine park's aquarium and undersea observation tower let non-divers view the same reef area without diving. Full scuba gear, including tanks and 3-5mm wetsuits suited to the local water temperature, is available to rent at Kushimoto Diving Park, so certified divers can travel without their own equipment; a certification card and logbook are the main items divers need to bring themselves. The dive center, operating alongside the marine park, is an established local operation staffed by instructors who dive the same sites regularly and can brief guests on current conditions, visibility, and marine life sightings before each trip. A pre-dive safety briefing covers the day's dive plan, entry and exit points, hand signals, and the nearest recompression chamber and emergency contact procedure in case of decompression illness. Diving is possible year-round, with a peak season from April through November when the water is warmer and calmer; July through September brings the warmest water and generally the best visibility, though it also coincides with Japan's typhoon season, so trips can be affected by storm swell. Winter diving is colder but often clearer, appealing to experienced divers with adequate thermal protection.
