Hotel Kurobe

Hotel Kurobe is a traditional ryokan-style hot spring hotel in Unazuki Onsen, a hot spring town in Kurobe City, Toyama Prefecture, at the entrance to the Kurobe Gorge in the Northern Japan Alps. Established in 1900, the property draws on mineral-rich alkaline spring water piped from the Unazuki hot spring source, prized locally for its smooth, skin-softening quality. The hotel's indoor and outdoor (rotenburo) bathing areas overlook the Kurobe River gorge, with several bath positions offering views of the forested valley and, in autumn, the surrounding maple foliage. Treatments center on communal onsen bathing rather than individual spa services: guests soak in gender-separated indoor baths and open-air pools fed continuously by the spring source. There is no dedicated massage or esthetic treatment menu; the wellness experience is built around bathing, rest, and kaiseki dining rather than therapist-administered treatments. For overnight guests, the hotel serves multi-course kaiseki dinners built around Toyama Bay seafood, including white shrimp and firefly squid when in season, alongside Alpine vegetables from the Kurobe foothills. Facilities include separate men's and women's bathing wings, a covered walkway to the outdoor pools, and guest rooms in a mix of Japanese tatami and Western-style layouts; there are no meditation rooms or fitness facilities. Day-use bathing is available to non-staying visitors, with towels available for rent at the front desk. Reservations are recommended for overnight stays, particularly during peak leaf-viewing season in October and November and the Golden Week holiday in early May; day-use bathing generally accepts walk-ins within the posted hours, though calling ahead is advisable when a large tour group is expected.
