Shogawa Gorge

Shogawa Gorge is a scenic river valley along National Route 156 in Nanto City, connecting the historic town of Johana to the Gokayama gassho-zukuri villages of Ainokura and Suganuma, and it follows the Shogawa River as it cuts through steep, forested mountainsides. Visitors typically experience the gorge as a scenic drive, with several roadside pull-offs offering views of the river, rock formations, and, depending on the season, small waterfalls fed by mountain runoff. The road passes near hydroelectric dam infrastructure built along the river in the early 20th century, remnants of which are still visible from certain viewpoints. A drive through the gorge with a few photo stops takes about one to two hours, depending on how many pull-offs are visited; the route itself takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes to drive without stopping. Autumn is the gorge's most popular season, from late October into early November, when maple and beech forests along the valley walls turn shades of red, orange, and yellow, drawing a steady flow of cars along the two-lane road, especially on weekends. Winter driving through the gorge requires caution, as the road can ice over and snowfall is common at the higher elevations near Gokayama. The gorge itself has no public transit stop, making it primarily accessible to visitors traveling by car or those on organized bus tours between Johana and the Gokayama villages.
