Yuki-no-Otani Snow Corridor Walk, Murodo

The Yuki-no-Otani Snow Corridor is a roughly 500-meter walking path cut through towering seasonal snow walls at Murodo, the highest station on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in eastern Toyama Prefecture. Compacted winter snowfall at 2,450 meters elevation is plowed each spring into a corridor whose walls reach 16 to 20 meters at their peak in late April, gradually melting down through June. The walk itself demands no technical skill or special fitness; the path is flat, paved, and suitable for most visitors, including children and older travelers, though the thin mountain air and cold can be tiring for some. No equipment is provided or required beyond suitable outerwear, since this is a self-guided walk along a public path rather than a guided tour; a free guided walk program organized by the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route runs at set departure times in the late April–May window for visitors who want commentary. Access is via the Alpine Route's cable cars, buses, and ropeways from Tateyama Station, with no equipment rental necessary. Safety is managed by Alpine Route staff who monitor the corridor for ice and falling snow along the walls; visitors stay within the marked walking path and should not climb or lean against the snow walls. Temperatures at Murodo remain near or below freezing even in May, and UV glare off the snow is intense at altitude. The best window is late April to early May, when the walls are at maximum height and freshest; by June the corridor narrows and eventually closes as the snow melts, with the walk unavailable outside the mid-April–late June season.
