Tateyama Backcountry Ski Touring

Tateyama backcountry ski touring covers multi-day routes around Murodo and Raicho Valley on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in eastern Toyama Prefecture, with approaches extending toward Tsurugidake for experienced parties. This is a guided, expert-oriented activity: participants need prior backcountry or off-piste skiing or splitboarding experience, solid physical fitness for multi-day ascents and descents at altitude, and comfort with avalanche terrain, since routes cross open alpine slopes above 2,400 meters with real avalanche exposure. Ski or splitboard touring setups, skins, and crampons are available to rent, but avalanche safety equipment, transceiver, probe, and shovel, along with a full alpine layering system, must be brought or arranged separately and are not casual add-ons. Guiding is provided by JMGA-certified (Japan Mountain Guides Association) mountain guides booked through the international platform Explore-Share, with local guiding also available through STEEP, both of which lead safety briefings covering avalanche conditions, route selection, and group rescue procedures before each tour; solo unguided touring in this terrain is not advisable given the avalanche risk and remoteness. Access to Murodo is via the Alpine Route's cable cars, ropeways, and buses from Toyama Station rather than skinning in from the valley floor. The touring season runs late April through early June while the Alpine Route operates, with a limited early-season window in late November; late April to mid-May is favored for stable spring snowpack and daylight, while the crowded Golden Week holiday period in early May is worth avoiding for both crowding and variable snow conditions. Guides monitor weather and avalanche bulletins daily and will adjust or cancel routes when conditions are unsafe.
