Tottori Sand Museum

The Tottori Sand Museum sits adjacent to the Tottori Sand Dunes in Fukube-cho and is dedicated entirely to large-scale sand sculpture, a medium the museum uses to build monumental figurative and architectural works from compacted sand and water without binding agents. The museum grew out of temporary sand-sculpture exhibitions held on the dunes beginning in 2006 and became a permanent indoor facility in 2012, allowing works to be displayed year-round rather than only during a seasonal outdoor event. Each year the museum commissions a team of international sand sculptors to build an entirely new set of large-scale works around a single country or region theme, with sculptures reaching several meters in height depicting landmarks, historical scenes, and cultural figures rendered in fine surface detail achievable only with specially compacted Tottori dune sand. Because the works are made purely from sand and water, they are inherently temporary, and the full exhibition hall is demolished and rebuilt with a new theme roughly once a year, meaning no two visits to the museum show the same sculptures. Curatorial presentation follows the annual theme through a walking route that groups sculptures by chronology or geography within that theme, accompanied by explanatory panels on both the featured subject matter and the sand-sculpting technique itself, including compaction methods and the fine-detail carving tools used by the visiting sculptors.
