Mount Daisen & Daisenji Temple

Mount Daisen, the highest peak in the Chugoku region and a sacred mountain for over 1,300 years, sits roughly 60 km southwest of Tottori City. Reaching the mountain from Tottori requires a bit of planning: the JR line runs to Yonago Station in 45-60 minutes, followed by a dedicated bus to Daisenji Temple that departs roughly every two hours starting at 7:20 a.m., taking about an hour and costing ¥730-930 ($4.90-6.20). Given the infrequent bus schedule, checking the timetable before departing Tottori is essential, and an early start is strongly recommended for hikers planning the full Misen Peak ascent. Daisenji Temple itself, reached via a long, moss-covered stone approach past Ogamiyama-jinja Okunomiya shrine, is worth exploring even for visitors not attempting the summit trail — the temple has roots going back over a millennium as a center of mountain asceticism. Hikers with a full day can continue up the Misen Peak Trail, a strenuous 10 km round trip with about 980 m of elevation gain to sweeping Sea of Japan views; those preferring a gentler outing can instead explore the temple precinct, the nearby Daisen-ji Museum, or short forest paths near the village without the full ascent. Daisen-cho village, clustered around the temple approach, has cafes and restaurants serving local specialties, including Daisen soba and dishes featuring the mountain's dairy products, since the surrounding pastureland supports one of western Japan's notable dairy industries. In winter, a small ski area operates on the mountain's northern slopes. Given the bus frequency and the length of a full hiking day, visitors should confirm the last return bus from Daisenji to Yonago before setting out, since missing it means a costly taxi or an overnight stay.
