San'in Kaigan Geopark Learning Center

The San'in Kaigan Geopark Learning Center, near the entrance to the Tottori Sand Dunes, explains the geology behind the San'in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark, which stretches along the coastline from Kyoto Prefecture to Tottori and includes the dunes themselves. Exhibits use models, rock and sand samples, and multimedia displays to illustrate how the dunes formed over roughly 100,000 years from sediment carried down the Sendai River and reshaped by wind and coastal currents, alongside displays on the wider geopark's volcanic and coastal features, including the Uradome Coast cliffs. The center is compact, with a single main exhibition floor that visitors can tour in 30 to 60 minutes, making it an efficient stop either before heading onto the dunes for context or afterward to better understand what was just seen. Some exhibits include hands-on elements, such as sand samples to touch and simplified geological cross-sections, that appeal to younger visitors. Because it sits directly on the walking route between the bus stop and the dunes entrance, most visitors combine it naturally with a dunes visit rather than making a dedicated trip; it is quiet most of the year, with modest upticks in visitors during school trip season in spring and autumn.
