Odaiba

Odaiba is a man-made island in Tokyo Bay, originally built in the 1850s as a set of defensive forts and later expanded through 20th-century land reclamation into the entertainment and shopping district it is today. The Yurikamome, an elevated automated rail line, approaches the island from Shimbashi along a curving, elevated track that itself offers sweeping views over the bay and the Rainbow Bridge before arriving on Odaiba. Odaiba Seaside Park runs along the island's northern waterfront, with a sandy beach, walking paths, and a small-scale replica of the Statue of Liberty positioned to frame the Rainbow Bridge and the Tokyo skyline behind it, particularly striking at sunset and after dark when the bridge is illuminated. Inland, DiverCity Tokyo Plaza is anchored by a large-scale Unicorn Gundam statue that periodically transforms with light and sound shows, while Aqua City and Palette Town add further shopping, dining, and an amusement complex including a large Ferris wheel. teamLab Planets, a separate immersive digital art museum from teamLab Borderless, sits on the island's eastern side and involves walking barefoot through water-filled and mirrored rooms. Because the attractions are spread across a fairly large area connected by the Yurikamome and walking paths, a full visit covering the waterfront park, a shopping complex, and one major attraction like teamLab Planets or the Gundam statue takes about four hours. The island is busiest on weekends, when both Japanese and international visitors combine the shopping malls with photo stops at the seaside park, while weekdays are markedly quieter across all the main sites. Evenings are considered the best time overall, since the Rainbow Bridge illumination, the skyline lights, and the Gundam statue's light shows are all best experienced after dark.
