Mashiko Pottery Fair (Toki Ichi)

Twice a year, the town of Mashiko in Tochigi Prefecture turns its Jonaizaka slope and central streets into one of Japan's largest open-air pottery markets, Toki Ichi. More than 500 stalls line the route during the Golden Week and early-November editions, run directly by Mashiko-yaki potters, apprentices, and kiln workshops rather than by resale dealers, so the vast majority of pieces are authentic studio work rather than imported trinkets. Goods range from everyday rice bowls and mugs at a few hundred yen to signed tableware, tea ceremony vessels, and large decorative jars priced in the tens of thousands of yen from established kiln masters. Bargaining is uncommon at individual stalls, though some potters will discount multi-piece purchases informally; most transactions are cash-only, with only a handful of larger booths and the permanent Mashiko Ceramic Art shops accepting cards, and there is no tax-refund scheme at the street stalls themselves. The fair draws large crowds from across Kanto, especially on the opening weekend, with food stalls selling grilled Mashiko pork, yakisoba, and local sake set up alongside the pottery. First-time visitors should walk the full length of Jonaizaka, where the oldest and most established workshops cluster, before continuing to the stalls near Kyodokan and the Mashiko Sankokan museum grounds for younger and experimental potters.
