Ryuzu Falls Inlet (Lake Chuzenji Upper Shore)

Ryuzu Falls Inlet sits at the upper end of Lake Chuzenji in Oku-Nikko, Tochigi, where the twin cascades of Ryuzu Falls split around a rocky outcrop before feeding into the lake. The shoreline here is rocky and uneven rather than sandy, and the inlet is shallow enough for wading but cold enough, fed directly by the falls, that swimming is rare. The setting is compact and sheltered by forest on both banks, giving it a quieter, more contained feel than the open lake shore a few kilometers away. Families and photographers make up much of the crowd, drawn by the waterfall views rather than water activities. Amenities include viewing platforms positioned on either side of the falls, a rest house with a noodle shop overlooking the water, and a trailhead for the Senjogahara marshland boardwalk that begins right at the inlet, making this a natural start or end point for a longer walk. Parking is limited to a small area near the falls, and there is no lifeguard or swimming infrastructure since the spot functions primarily as a scenic viewpoint and trail access point. From central Nikko, the inlet lies about 56km away, reached by continuing on the Tobu bus from Chuzenjiko Onsen a further 15 minutes for ¥350 (~$2.20), or by rental car along the lakeside road. The best seasons are June, when fresh green foliage fills the valley, and late September into early October, when the surrounding maples turn some of the most photographed autumn colour in the Oku-Nikko region. Visitors heading up during peak foliage weekends should expect the small parking area and rest house to fill quickly around midday.
