Lake Chuzenji Shore (Chugushi Swimming and Boating Area)

Lake Chuzenji sits at 1,269m elevation in Nikko City, Tochigi, formed centuries ago when a lava flow from nearby Mount Nantai dammed the valley. At Chugushi, on the lake's eastern shore, the shoreline is rocky and pebbled rather than sandy, and the water runs clear and cold year-round thanks to the highland elevation, making the spot better suited to boating and wading than swimming. The shore is open and unsheltered, giving wide views across the lake toward Mount Nantai, with little wind protection on blustery days. The atmosphere leans toward families and couples out for a lakeside stroll or a boat ride rather than a party scene, especially around the Chuzenji Onsen promenade where the pace stays relaxed. Amenities cluster near the boat pier and promenade: a sightseeing boat dock with hourly lake cruises, rowboat and pedal boat rental running May through October, a paved lakeside walkway, parking, and a strip of onsen ryokan and cafes serving food and drink within a short walk of the water. There is no lifeguard service and no designated swimming beach, so visitors wading in should expect a natural, unsupervised shoreline. Access from central Nikko is straightforward: the Tobu bus from Tobu-Nikko or JR-Nikko Station reaches Chuzenjiko Onsen in 45-50 minutes for ¥1,150 (~$7.23), and the Chuzenji Onsen Free Pass at ¥2,300 (~$14.47) covers two days of unlimited rides on the local bus network, useful for combining the shore with nearby Ryuzu Falls. Peak visitation comes in July and August, when Kanto residents seek relief from lowland heat in the cooler highland air, and again in October, when maple and birch foliage along the surrounding slopes reflects across the still water. Parking near the promenade fills quickly on autumn weekends as tour buses arrive, so an early start or a weekday visit makes for an easier trip.
