Lake Hamana & Hamamatsu Castle

Lake Hamana is a brackish lagoon about 10 km west of central Hamamatsu, reached in 40-45 minutes by Entetsu Bus from Hamamatsu Station to Kanzanji Onsen on the lake's northeast shore, or in 20-25 minutes by car via Route 257. Kanzanji Onsen serves as the main base for exploring the lake, with a ropeway climbing Mt Okusa for a panoramic view over the water, and pleasure boats running a 30-minute cruise between Kanzanji pier and the Hamamatsu Flower Park pier on the lake's southern shore. Hamamatsu Castle, in the city center rather than at the lake itself, is a reconstructed keep associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu's early career and is typically visited on the way to or from the station rather than combined directly with the lakeside portion of the trip. A typical day starts with a stop at Hamamatsu Castle Park near the station, then the bus or drive out to Kanzanji Onsen, the ropeway up Mt Okusa for the lake view, and either the lake cruise to Hamamatsu Flower Park or a walk along the Kanzanji lakefront promenade, with unagi (eel) restaurants near both the castle and the lake serving Hamamatsu's signature dish for lunch or dinner. April and May bring tulips and wisteria into bloom at the Flower Park, making the lake cruise plus garden combination especially worthwhile in that window, while the castle, ropeway, and lakefront are agreeable in any season. The Tenryu Hamanako Railway also skirts the lake's northern edge for those wanting a scenic local train ride as part of the day.
