Cape Omaezaki & the Enshu Coast

Cape Omaezaki is a wind-swept promontory on Shizuoka Prefecture's Enshu coast, about 25 km from Kakegawa Station and reachable in roughly 40 minutes by car or about 50 minutes by local bus, since no rail line runs directly to the cape. The Omaezaki Lighthouse, an active navigational light open for visitors to climb, sits at the point itself and offers a 360-degree view over the Pacific and the surrounding coastline, one of the few lighthouses in Japan open to the public for an entry fee. The Enshu coast stretching northwest from the cape is a long, exposed sand-and-surf shoreline popular with surfers, with consistent swells from the open Pacific making it one of the region's more reliable surf breaks, particularly from September through February. A typical day trip involves a car or bus ride out to Omaezaki town, a climb up the lighthouse for the coastal panorama, then a walk or drive along the Enshu coast toward Sagara to watch or join surfers, with a handful of small seafood restaurants and cafes in Omaezaki town serving local katsuo (bonito) and shirasu (whitebait) dishes for lunch. Because there is no direct train service, a rental car offers the most flexibility for combining the lighthouse with stops along the wider coast, while the local bus from Kakegawa Station is a workable option for a lighthouse-focused visit alone. The cape is exposed to strong coastal winds year-round, so a windbreaker is advisable regardless of season, and the clearest coastal visibility for photography tends to fall on crisp winter days between September and February.
