Shiohama Beach

Shiohama Beach is the largest sandy beach on Dogo Island in the Oki Islands, an archipelago in the Sea of Japan reached by ferry from the Shimane mainland. The sand is fine and pale, backed by a stretch of coastline that mixes open sand with nearby rocky outcrops suited to tidepooling and rock walking. As the island's principal swimming beach, Shiohama draws a mix of local families and visiting divers and snorkellers who come for the clear water typical of the Oki Islands, an area known nationally for its marine visibility. The beach itself is moderately exposed, facing open water without a sheltering headland, so conditions are calmest during the height of summer and can turn choppier with wind from the open sea outside the July-August season. Facilities include restrooms and showers, and small shops open specifically during the official sea-bathing season to serve visitors with food and swimming supplies; outside that window, services are minimal. Rock walking areas nearby add a secondary draw beyond swimming, giving visitors a reason to explore the coastline even outside prime bathing conditions. Reaching Shiohama Beach requires some planning: visitors take a ferry from Shichirui Port near Matsue or from Sakaiminato to Saigo Port on Dogo Island, a crossing of two to three hours, followed by a 20-minute drive by rental car or taxi to the beach. This remote, multi-step journey means Shiohama sees far fewer visitors than mainland Shimane beaches, giving it a quieter, more local character even in peak season, and visitors should plan ferry schedules carefully since services are limited compared with mainland transport.
