Kirara Beach

Kirara Beach lies on the Sea of Japan coast in Taki-cho, a fishing town within Izumo City, and is one of the more family-oriented beaches in Shimane Prefecture. The sand is fine and white, and the water is notably clear and shallow close to shore, making it one of the gentler swimming spots along this stretch of coast compared with the more exposed, surf-friendly beaches further west toward Hamada. The beach forms a relatively open bay rather than a tight cove, but a low profile and gradual slope keep wave action manageable for wading and swimming through most of the summer season. Kirara Beach has also been ranked among Japan's Top 100 Sunsets, and the crowd on a clear summer evening skews toward families and couples watching the sun drop into the Sea of Japan rather than a party atmosphere. Facilities are more developed than at many rural Shimane beaches: public toilets, changing rooms, and paid showers are all available, and lifeguards are posted on weekends during the official bathing season, giving parents an extra measure of confidence when children are in the water. The beach sits beside the Roadside Station (michi-no-eki) Kirara Taki on National Route 9, so visitors arriving by car can combine a swim with a stop for local seafood and produce at the station's shops and restaurants. Parking is available at the roadside station itself, an easy walk from the sand. For those without a car, the beach is a 10-minute walk from JR Oda Station on the San'in Line, making it one of the more transit-accessible beaches in the region. Because it faces the open sea with no breakwater, conditions can still turn choppy in windy weather or outside the July-August peak, and visitors swimming outside the lifeguard hours should treat the water with the same caution as any unsupervised open-sea beach in Japan.
