Hikone Castle

Hikone Castle's three-story keep is one of only twelve original castle keeps left standing in Japan, and one of just five holding National Treasure status, having survived the Meiji-era demolition orders that destroyed most of the country's castles. Visitors climb through the keep on steep, narrow wooden staircases original to the 1622 construction, passing gun ports, stone-drop openings, and low doorways designed to slow attackers, before reaching the top-floor viewing gallery with views over the castle town and Lake Biwa. The grounds also include Tenbin Yagura, a rare turret shaped like a pair of scales connected by a corridor gate, and the Umaya, one of the few surviving Edo-period stables at any Japanese castle. A full loop of the grounds, keep, and Genkyuen Garden below the castle mound takes most visitors two to three hours. Photographers favor the approach across Kyobashi Bridge and the moat for classic reflection shots of the keep, as well as the view back toward the keep from Genkyuen Garden. The site draws its heaviest crowds on spring weekends when cherry blossoms line the moat and in autumn when the surrounding trees turn color; arriving at opening time on a weekday morning gives the clearest run of the keep's stairways before tour groups arrive.
