Genkyuen Garden

Genkyuen is a classic Edo-period 'strolling garden,' laid out in 1677 for the Ii clan around a central pond dotted with small islands and crossed by nine wooden bridges. The garden's design deliberately incorporates Hikone Castle's keep as borrowed scenery, so many of the paths and the teahouse, Hoshoan, are positioned to frame the castle above the trees across the water. A full loop of the winding gravel paths, over the bridges, and up to the small hilltop pavilion for the best elevated view takes most visitors 45 minutes to an hour, and the garden is small enough to see fully even on a tight schedule. Mid-November is the garden's most photographed period, when maple trees around the pond turn deep red and reflect in the still water, while early April brings a lighter crowd for cherry blossoms along the entrance path. Because the garden sits at the base of the castle mound, visits are commonly combined with a climb to the keep either before or after. Weekday mornings are quietest; the compact size means weekend afternoons in peak foliage season can feel crowded along the narrow bridge crossings.
