Nagatoro Line Kudari River Boat Rafting

Nagatoro Line Kudari is a traditional wooden-boat rafting trip through the Nagatoro gorge on the Arakawa River in Chichibu District, Saitama. Licensed boatmen pole and paddle flat-bottomed wooden boats down a roughly 3km stretch that mixes calm, mirror-flat water with short bursts of Class I–II rapids as the river cuts through the Iwadatami rock terraces, a designated national scenic and natural monument. No fitness or paddling experience is required; the boatmen do all the navigating, and passengers simply sit and hold on during the rapid sections. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult and fit a provided life jacket, and there is no upper age limit under normal health. A life jacket is provided and worn by every passenger; a rain poncho can be hired for around ¥100 and water shoes are recommended since some spray reaches the boat. The operator, Nagatoro Funakudari, is a long-established boating association affiliated with the Chichibu Railway and has run passenger boats on this stretch of the Arakawa for decades, with boatmen trained in the specific rock formations and water conditions of the gorge. Before departure, staff give a short safety briefing covering how to sit, where to hold on during rapids, and what to do if the boat takes on water; boatmen carry rescue poles and coordinate by radio with other boats and the riverside control point in case of an incident. The trip runs from March through November and is suspended in the coldest winter weeks and whenever water levels are judged too high or too low for safe passage after heavy rain or drought. Photography is generally welcome, though loose electronics should be secured in a dry bag rather than held over the water during the rapids.
