Kawakami Shrine (Yodohime Shrine)

Kawakami Shrine, also known as Yodohime Shrine, sits along the Kase River in the Kawakami area of Yamato-cho, Saga City, at the entrance to a scenic river gorge upstream from the city center. The shrine is dedicated to Yodohime, a legendary figure associated with the Kase River in local folklore, with tradition holding that she transformed into a dragon to protect the river and the surrounding valley, a story still referenced in the shrine's rituals and in local place names along the gorge. The shrine buildings themselves are modest in scale compared to larger sites such as Yutoku Inari, consisting of a main hall and torii gate set among mature trees at the mouth of the gorge, with the Kase River running alongside the approach. The setting is the shrine's main draw: the surrounding Kawakami Gorge is lined with maple trees that turn vivid red and orange in November, making the shrine and riverside path a popular, though still relatively low-key, foliage-viewing spot compared to more heavily touristed autumn destinations in Kyushu. A visit to the shrine grounds alone takes about 30 to 45 minutes, while continuing along the riverside path into the gorge for foliage viewing can extend a visit to an hour or more. The site is reached only by car or taxi, and because of this it remains quiet even during peak autumn color, when nearby, more accessible foliage spots draw larger crowds.
